I was born in Hobbs, New Mexico on April the 20th in 1949. I am the only one in my family that was not born in Texas. Nine days after I was born mom and dad moved back to Texas. They bounced around the state, Sweetwater, Amarillo, and settled in Plainview. I was around 4 years old by then. My dad felt the call to preach the gospel and he and mom both enrolled in Wayland Baptist College. I remember dad preaching at a small country church somewhere in the boonies of

I remember dad preaching at a small country church somewhere in the boonies of West Texas. I slept through most of his sermons. We, my two older brothers and I would have lots of fun playing with the other country kids that went to church where dad preached. I think the Sardus Baptist Church was The name of the church. Dad did not preach but a couple of years there and we started going to church at College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview. My parents took all of us boys to church almost every time the doors were open. Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Wednesday night for prayer meeting and RA’s. Dad’s philosophy was an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. So he kept us busy, one way or another. We didn’t get a motorized lawn mower until we were in high school. We got to dig up the yard several times a year, move a pile of bricks twice a month and clean the yard regularly. We didn’t understand at the time but dad through all the tasks he had us doing we were building a work ethic that would carry us through the rest of our lives.

I was 9 years old and the church was having a revival like they did every year. I had been in vacation bible school every year that I could remember. The revival was in the fall but during the vacation bible school that spring the Lord had been speaking to my heart. I had started listening to the preacher instead of drawing pictures or sleeping. By the time the revival came around I was feeling the Holy Spirit convicting me and giving me an understanding of what sin was and by the time I had listened to a full week of preaching and had some prompting from the Holy Spirit. On Sunday morning the last day of the revival The Holy Spirit fell on me so much that I almost ran down to the front during the invitation and told the pastor I wanted to be saved , I wanted Jesus to come into my life. He led me in the sinner’s prayer and I felt as though I was levitating 2 feet off the floor. I had never felt anything like that ever before. The Holy Spirit came into my heart that day and is still there, Praise Jesus I was set free from my sin. Then when I was baptized The Holy Spirit lifted me out of the water and I don’t remember touching the steps coming out of the baptistery.

From then on God has guided me through my life. Sure there have been times when I would get off the narrow trail and get into what the world had to offer but as the Word says “ those whom He loves he also chastens. “ Every time I have allowed Satan to lead me astray, Jesus was on my heels convincing me that the direction I was headed was leading toward disaster. Unfortunately I had to survive the disaster a few times before I would say yes Lord I am sorry for going astray. Thank you for your mercy and grace. Jesus has rescued me several times. Once he spoke to me in a loud voice. Not just a still small voice. I wasn’t listening to His Still Small voice so he had to get my attention. The hair rose on the back of my neck and goose bumps the size of goose eggs popped up all over me. I immediately responded to his instructions and another big change happened in my life. It took a lot of years to develop an ear to listen for Jesus voice but the older I get; the closer I want to be to Him. He tells us to give him our burdens. I learned that as a teenager. I have been accused of ignoring my problems until they just go away. Jesus has fixed so many of the messes I’ve made. Depending on him to carry I through this life have become second nature. He gave me a wife that is beautiful both inside and out. I have been blessed with a life partner that only God could have picked out for me. In fact I asked God to pick her for me. Knowing Jesus and having Jesus as a guide throughout my life has been such a blessing it is hard to understand why the world wants to reject a way of life that promotes Peace, Love, Joy and true happiness.
